George Walker’s Lilacs, for Voice and Orchestra receives its world premiere.

February 1, 1996

The work, part of a program celebrating the life and work of Roland Hayes, is performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Seiji Ozawa conducting, at Symphony Hall. Faye Robinson is featured soloist. Walker is later awarded a Pulitzer Prize for the piece, the first African-American classical music composer so honored.
